2001 - American Association for Higher Education's Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service
2001 - Legacy Leader of APALA and CALA at the First National Conference on Asian Pacific American Librarians, San Francisco
1999 - Grazella Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Education by the Case Western Reserve University's Educator's Forum
1997 - ALISE-Pratt/Severn National Faculty Award (first)
1996 – American Library Association Humphry/OCLC/Forest Press Award on International Achievement
1994 – LITA/Library High Tech Award
1992 - Silver Medal of CINDY Award of the Association of Visual Communicators, for Voyager's version of The First Emperor of China videodisc
1990 - LITA/Gaylord Award for Achievement in Library and Information Technology
1985 - Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Chen is the recipient of Distinguished Alumni Awards from her three Alma Maters (National Taiwan University, University of Michigan, Case Western Reserve), and has served as an Honorary Professor of several universities, including Tsinghua University and Hainan University, China.

During 1996-1998 she was also selected by Avenue Asia as one of the "500 Most Influential Asian-Americans in the U.S."

Her biography has been selected for inclusion in over 30 major biographical reference publications globally including American Men & Women of Science, Biography International, Contemporary Authors, 5,000 Personalities of the World, Foremost Women of the Twentieth Century, International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, Men & Women of Distinction, 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century, Who's Who in America, and The World Who's Who of Women.
